USDA Opposes Two Damaging SNAP Proposals

From the Food Research and Action Center (http://www.frac.org):

USDA has heeded the voices of anti-hunger advocates from across the country who submitted hundreds of thousands of comments opposing two damaging SNAP proposals and has withdrawn them.

Even prior to the pandemic, the proposed change to the state SNAP option regarding asset and gross income limits would have thrown 3.1 million people off SNAP and jeopardized free school meals for 1 million children.

Moreover, the second proposed change was estimated to cut SNAP food benefits by $4.5 billion and hit households that struggle to put food on the table and pay for utilities particularly hard.

FRAC is pleased to have joined with Feeding America, Center on Budget Policy & Priorities, and Center for American Progress in pushing back on these proposed rules. FRAC and its national network of anti-hunger advocates will continue to work to protect, strengthen, and expand access to SNAP, the nation’s first line of defense against hunger.
