From the Clean Air Council (http://www.cleanair.org/):
Pennsylvania is about to take a major step to limit carbon pollution produced by Pennsylvania power plants by joining a market-based program called the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI).
In 11 states, RGGI has cut climate pollution nearly in half while raising over $3 billion to invest in clean energy, energy efficiency, and lower consumer electricity bills. It is time for Pennsylvania to share in RGGI’s success, cutting climate-disrupting carbon pollution, stimulating investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy, and creating tens of thousands of new local jobs.
RGGI will reduce carbon pollution from Pennsylvania power plants by 188 million tons (the same impact as taking 4 million cars off the road), create 27,000 jobs, and boost the state’s economy by nearly $2 billion just by 2030.
Currently, there are bills in the State House and State Senate that will either support or disrupt Pennsylvania’s attempt to join RGGI. Go to https://cleanaircouncil.salsalabs.org/rggihbsbclicktocall/index.html to tell your state legislators to vote yes on HB 1656 or SB 15 and to vote no on HB 637 or SB 119.
In addition to funding important renewable energy and energy efficiency programs, SB 15 and HB 1565 would also create funds to invest in bill assistance for low-income ratepayers, support for environmental justice communities, and support for workers and communities transitioning to a post-coal world.
However, SB 119 and HB 637 would strip DEP of its existing legal authority to limit carbon pollution and would block the state from participating in RGGI
Please tell your state legislators to support Pennsylvania’s participation in RGGI.
