Tell Congress to Reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act—Protect Partners from Domestic Abuse

Sign the petition at https://www.dailykos.com/campaigns/forms/sign-the-petition-keep-firearms-out-of-the-hands-of-domestic-abusers-2: Pass laws that protect domestic violence survivors from gun violence across the country. Reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act.

Right now, it’s far too easy for domestic abusers to access guns, and that has deadly consequences. In fact, we know that the presence of a gun in a domestic violence situation makes it five times more likely that a woman will be killed. But we also know that common-sense laws that keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers reduce gun violence and save lives.

There are already bills in Congress that would go a long way to strengthen our gun safety laws. This year, the Violence Against Women Act was reauthorized in the House—it would prohibit convicted stalkers and people who have abused their dating partners from buying or owning firearms.

Domestic violence and gun violence are intimately connected——a deadly combination exacerbated by America’s weak gun laws, and we need all Senators, on both sides of the aisle, to support this bill. Here’s where you come in:

The gun lobby loudly opposes common sense changes that would reduce violence against women and families, but these laws just make sense. Now is the time for us to urge lawmakers to do what’s right: Sign the petition from Everytown for Gun Safety to tell your Senators to do their jobs and reauthorize the life-saving Violence Against Women Act.
