A Green New Deal represents a historic investment in the development of renewable energy technology, improving energy efficiency, as well as creating more than one million green jobs over the next ten years.
Such an investment, supporters argue, is fundamentally necessary to combat climate change within our lifetimes. And the price tag, proponents argue, is completely covered by converting fossil fuel subsidies toward subsidizing green energy and jobs.
Each year, the United States spends $650 billion subsidizing the fossil fuel industry — from helping cover the costs of offshore drilling platforms to tax cuts for billion-dollar multinational corporations.
A Green New Deal would convert those subsidies into research and development of solar, wind, geothermal, hydropower, and more sustainable energy options.
That’s why 314 Action, a leading scientific advocacy organization, is working to replace 25 climate change deniers in the House and the Senate with scientists who WILL act on climate change in 2020.
