Tell Congress About the Importance of Homeless Assistance Grants and Rental Assistance

From the National Alliance to End Homelessness (http://www.endhomelessness.org):

As Congress nears the end of its work for the current budget year, we have an important opportunity to secure more funding for homelessness and affordable housing. The President’s budget request for the next fiscal year includes billions more for Tenant Based Rental Assistance and a 17% year-over-year increase in homelessness spending, their highest levels yet.

This funding is now being debated in Congress. While the House of Representatives has passed a bill that would do even better than the President’s request, passage in the Senate may be more difficult. The timing for final decisions is uncertain, meaning that a constant drumbeat starting now is needed to get the best possible result.

Without more aid to those who have already lost their housing and to millions of households who are struggling to pay the rent, America cannot make real progress to ending homelessness.

We need your help in communicating the importance of Homeless Assistance Grants and rental assistance to your Representatives and Senators at https://endhomelessness.org/actions/tell-congress-homelessness-funding-is-critical-in-fy23/. While it shouldn’t be so hard to convince legislators to fund these basic necessities, our budget requests are competing with so many other interests and concerns on Capitol Hill.

We need Congress to back the Administration’s funding recommendations in the appropriations process. These investments will save lives, reduce encampments, avoid evictions, and prevent the enormous toll of human suffering and trauma brought about by homelessness.

Please tell your Representatives and Senators that the President’s Fiscal Year 2023 added investments in homelessness and rental assistance are long overdue. Current appropriation levels simply do not meet today’s needs. Too many of our fellow Americans are waiting to come inside, while millions more are on the brink of joining them.

The timeline to impact this budget debate is reaching its final stage. Please act today.
