Welcome to the launch of the #Shut Down Berks video series. For the next six weeks the Shut Down Berks Coalition will be sharing a short video about the fight to end family detention in Pennsylvania. Today we’re focusing on the well known effects on the mental and physical health of children held in detention.

The International Detention Coalition found that “detention itself causes or reinforces children’s mental and emotional health problems. The unique vulnerabilities of children place them especially at risk of health and development issues” and that “evidence exists of a detrimental effect on mental and physical health of children held in immigration detention for short periods.”

Yet despite the fact that family detention is breaking Federal and State law the prison has been allowed to continue to detain families. This could stop now is the state of Pennsylvania, specifically Governor Wolf, decided to issue an Emergency Removal Order.
