Act to Protect Families, Cut Funding for Detention and Deportations

From Church World Service (http://www.churchworldservice.org):

As Congress debates how to end the partial government shutdown, it is critical that we urge them to reopen the government, without endangering our immigrant neighbors. The administration has undertaken a deliberately cruel and dehumanizing strategy of unjust detention, a militarized border, and deportations. Worse yet are the heartbreaking  impacts of the administration turning its back on asylum seekers, imprisoning and separating families, and tear gassing individuals seeking safety. Most importantly, these policies have resulted in the tragic deaths of two children while in government custody. All people have the right to seek a safe place to call home, and seeking asylum is protected within U.S. and international law. People of faith and conscience must make our voices heard to urge Congress to responsibly reopen the federal government and simultaneously cut funding for detention, deportations, and border militarization.

Sample Script: “I am your constituent from [CITY/TOWN], and as a person of faith, I urge the Senator/Representative to affirm the right of all people to seek asylum and protection. Please do everything in your power to ensure the administration processes and welcomes asylum seekers and upholds family unity. To turn them away, incarcerate or prosecute them, or separate their families runs counter to our moral duty to ensure that people are properly screened. I call on you to responsibly reopen the government and simultaneously cut funding for deportation agents, detention beds, wall construction, and militarization of border communities. This spending tears families apart, leaves vulnerable populations unprotected, and erodes our nation’s responsibility to welcome the stranger. My community welcomes and values immigrants, and I urge you to do the same.”
