Sign Petition to Senate: Pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act

From the Coalition on Human Needs (http://www.chn.org):

Voting rights in our country are under attack. The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, H.R.4, is an important step towards creating national voting standards―ensuring that our voices are heard equally at the ballot box, no matter who we are or where we live.

The House of Representatives, last week, passed this urgently needed legislation. Now, it must pass the Senate, where it faces steep opposition.

This summer, the Supreme Court upheld restrictions in Arizona which make it more difficult to vote. The Supreme Court ruling, according to the New York Times, “gave states new latitude to impose restrictions on voting, using a ruling in a case from Arizona to signal that challenges to laws being passed by Republican legislatures that make it harder for minority groups to vote would face a hostile reception from a majority of the justices.”1

Accessing the right to vote is central to our democracy and to a representative government.

According to National Public Radio, the bill, passed by the House along party lines, would “strengthen the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which had been weakened by a pair of Supreme Court rulings over the course of the last decade” and would make it more difficult for states to restrict future voting access.2

Add your name! Demand the Senate strengthen our democracy by passing the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

This bill would restore the provisions of the Voting Rights Act struck down by the Supreme Court including the reimplementation of federal oversight to prevent changes to voting laws that disproportionately affect communities of color and stop the flood of Republican voter suppression bills.

Thank you for all you do to demand accountability from our political leaders and to fight for the needs of working families, the vulnerable, the sick and the poor.
