New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia Seeking Community Organizer

The New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia is seeking a Community Organizer to join our diverse team working to build a faith-based grassroots movement for immigrant justice, win campaigns, and change the balance of power.  We are offering the option of full time or 30 hours per week.

NSM is an interfaith, multicultural immigrant justice organization working to build community across faith, ethnicity, and class in our work to end injustices against immigrants regardless of immigration status, express radical welcome for all, and ensure that values of dignity, justice, and hospitality are lived out in practice and upheld in policy. Responsibilities Include:

  • Work with congregations of different religions and ethnicities
  • Conduct 1-1 meetings with new and current members on a weekly basis
  • Build teams in congregations, spending time each week in congregations
  • Leadership Development – identify potential leaders and develop skills
  • Build and guide campaigns – lead groups to identify, develop and implement a faith based organizing campaign
  • Develop relationships with new congregations
  • Build and maintain relationships with other organizations and coalitions in city, state and country
  • Represent a faith voice in these issues
  • Help with administrative and communications work in NSM office
  • Participate in decision making of organization

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years experience in community organizing.  This includes recruiting new members, building groups, developing leaders, planning campaign strategy and direct action
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – ability to build and maintain relationships with community members and clergy of different ethnicities and faiths
  • Engaged in one’s own spiritual journey, comfortable in the language and life of faith, and open to a variety of religious experiences
  • Passionate about social justice and immigrant justice
  • Understanding of politics and policy
  • Highly motivated and independent worker
  • Desire to learn, grow and be challenged
  • Problem solving skills
  • Ability to work as part of team in a growing organization
  • Experience with group facilitation
  • Flexible hours – significant evenings and weekends
  • Bi-lingual in English/Spanish or English/Indonesian

A Plus:  Bi-cultural and/or a member of the immigrant community

Salary:  All full time employees of NSM earn $35,000 per year plus benefits.
