LCV’s 2016 Environmental Scorecard—Thank Environmental Champions

From Conservation Voters of PA (http://www.conservationpa.org):

The 2016 National Environmental Scorecard numbers have been crunched, tallied, and posted, and boy are they abysmal. More House votes were scored in 2016 than ever before. Which means that if Speaker Paul Ryan keeps up his pace this year, we could see some of the worst attacks on environmental protections in history.

See who voted with your best interest in mind and who sided with polluters last year in LCV’s 2016 National Environmental Scorecard at http://scorecard.lcv.org/?state=PA

Compared to some other states, Pennsylvania is lucky. We have at least one U.S. Senator – Senator Bob Casey – who has been a true champion for clean water, breathable air, and accessible public lands and protected our natural resources 100 percent of the time.

On the other hand, Senator Pat Toomey earned a terrible 0 percent, siding with Big Polluters every chance he got.

This last Congress was the most anti-environmental Congress in our nation’s history, and the new Congress has already started launching one attack after another on health and clean water safeguards.

That’s why it’s more important than ever that we keep a close eye on how our elected officials are voting. See which votes earned our senators their score for the environment in 2016 >>

The 2016 National Environmental Scorecard includes 17 votes in the Senate. Under Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the Senate joined the House to attack critical environmental safeguards. McConnell prioritized his polluter allies over the American people. The average Senate Republican score for 2016 was 14 percent, while the average Senate Democrat score was 95 percent.

But despite the constant attacks on the environment in both the House and the Senate, our champs were stronger than ever. Senator Casey, along with Reps. Robert Brady, Brendan Boyle, Matt Cartwright, and Mike Doyle, called out these assaults and spoke out more forcefully than ever for our environment, our health, and our future. Dwight Evans joined Congress last November and is off to a great start, voting the right way on the one bill that came before him and earning his first 100 percent score. And several Republican lawmakers, including Reps. Ryan Costello and Patrick Meehan, significantly improved their score from the previous year.

The first step to getting more pro-environmental policies passed is letting your members of Congress know that you’re paying attention. Let’s make sure we continue to thank our champions for voting for our health and the environment and hold those elected officials accountable when they put profits ahead of public health.
