The disastrous 5-4 Citizens United Supreme Court decision over a decade ago opened the floodgates to corporate money in politics. But it’s not just U.S. money that’s being used to influence our elections.
For-profit U.S. corporations that are owned by foreign investors are pouring unlimited cash into American elections.
Now, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) has introduced the Get Foreign Money Out of U.S. Elections Act to close this dangerous Citizens United loophole. While election law prohibits foreign nationals from spending money in U.S. elections, no law bars political spending by American-registered corporations—including large multinationals that are foreign-owned, foreign-controlled, or foreign-influenced. The Get Foreign Money Out of U.S. Elections Act would prevent this foreign spending and ensure that the ultimate origin of money spent in American political campaigns is from U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents.
