Call Senators Casey and Toomey to Oppose Senate Health Care Bill

From Faith in Public Life (http://www.faithinpubliclife.org):

Even though Sen. McConnell pulled the Senate’s immoral repeal of affordable health care yesterday, which would strip 22 million Americans of health insurance, we’re not out of the woods yet.

Please call our Senators and tell them that taking health care away from low-income families, seniors and children is wrong. The vote will be VERY close and many Senators are teetering on the fence.

Dial your Senators:

  • Sen. Casey – (202) 224-6324
  • Sen. Toomey – (202) 224-4254

You don’t need to be a policy expert to make an impression. Tell them you’re a person of faith (or clergy) and you oppose the Senate health care bill on moral grounds.

  1. It is immoral to deprive 22 million vulnerable people of the coverage they depend on — especially while giving the very wealthy a huge tax cut.
  2. The bill will increase the number of uninsured children by 50%.
  3. It will devastate rural hospitals that provide lifelines and good jobs in hard-hit communities.

These Senators are human beings and they need to hear about the human and moral toll of this legislation.

Again, you can call at:

  • Sen. Casey – (202) 224-6324
  • Sen. Toomey – (202) 224-4254

After we speak out to our Senators, we’ll need to talk to our communities, congregations and neighbors to raise awareness and solidify opposition to this wrongheaded legislation. This messaging memo will help. A couple of additional pointers: first, take care not to overwhelm people with facts and figures. The fact that 15 million Americans would lose their health coverage next year alone, and 22 million people would lose insurance over 10 years, is enough.

Second, put a human face on the debate. If you have personal stories of people who stand to be harmed (including yourself), share those stories. That’s more effective than any talking point.

And for now, focus on the persuadable low-hanging fruit, not the most argumentative and opinionated people you know. There will be time for them later.

Finally, we need to pray for the people who stand to lose their affordable coverage and even their lives and pray for the people who are weighing whether to support this unconscionable legislation.
