Thank Governor Wolf, Urge PA General Assembly to Uphold Veto of Tax Giveaway to Petrochemical Industry

posted in: Environment, Uncategorized | 0

Governor Wolf has vetoed HB 1100, a massive tax giveaway for construction of new petrochemical facilities in Pennsylvania. We are grateful for his action—and we encourage you to reach out to thank him. You can call his office at 717-787-2500, or send him a message through his portal at https://www.governor.pa.gov/contact/.

Our work now turns to upholding the Governor’s veto—critical, as this bill passed in both chambers of the General Assembly with enough votes to override the veto if they decide to do so. We encourage you to send the message below to your state senator and state representative at: https://org2.salsalabs.com/o/5415/p/dia/action4/common/public/?action_KEY=27021. (NOTE: We encourage you to edit the message to reflect your concerns, and to call their offices as well—find their phone numbers at http://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/home/findyourlegislator/index.cfm#address

Here is the faith message: Please vote to support the Governor in his veto of HB 1100. The petrochemical industry in Pennsylvania endangers the lives and livelihoods of Pennsylvanians—particularly those who are most vulnerable (seniors, children, people with respiratory or chronic conditions). As people of faith, we have a responsibility to protect our vulnerable neighbors. We also have a responsibility to protect our fragile creation which is essential to support all of us—and this industry has contaminated our water resources (which support life, industry, and recreational), polluted our air (contributing to climate change and to endangerment of human health), and destroyed the quality of life for people living and working close to these facilities through traffic, odors, and noise (in addition to the damage to air and water).

We must remind our legislators of Article 1, Section 27 of our state’s constitution – the Environmental Rights Amendment:  “The people have a right to clean air, pure water, and to the preservation of the natural, scenic, historic, and esthetic values of the environment.”

We must also remind them that we have alternatives to help us kick our fossil fuel addiction, not continue to rely on it more and more—and that focusing on this industry does not move us in the right direction.

Contact your state senator and state representative today to tell them to protect Pennsylvania’s residents and the environment by upholding the Governor’s veto of HB 1100. Then share this message with family and friends.
