Act Now to Urge Corrections Officials to Protect Incarcerated Persons During COVID-19 Crisis

From Families Against Mandatory Minimums (http://famm.org/):

We know that the coronavirus outbreak is a frightening and stressful time for all. It is especially frightening for people in prison and their loved ones. Almost all prisons and jails have canceled visits, which will be hard for families.

First, we want you to know that FAMM is working with federal and state lawmakers to find ways to release people from prison who are most at risk from the coronavirus. We have been warning for years that our prisons are overfilled, especially with elderly and sick people who pose little threat to public safety. Now these people are most at risk. We will keep you posted on our efforts to secure early releases.

Second, we want your help in making policymakers aware of the unique danger posed to people in prison. Please contact your state and federal lawmakers and ask them to urge corrections officials to take steps to keep incarcerated people safe and healthy during this time.

Third, we expect that many state legislatures will temporarily cease work — which means that the bills we support will not advance as quickly as we’d like. FAMM will keep fighting for reform and keep you updated on the progress of criminal justice reform legislation — and how you can help.

Finally, here at FAMM, we are working remotely and staying home, doing our part to reduce the spread of the virus. We encourage you to engage with us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Most importantly, take care of yourself, your loved ones, and your community; and stay healthy and safe during this time.
