Oxfam Releases Global Inequality Report; Urge Congress and the President to Prioritize Workers and Families, Fight Against COVID Internationally

From Oxfam America (http://www.oxfamamerica.org):

As has become tradition, Oxfam released our Inequality report during the annual World Economic Forum meeting at Davos where many of the world’s top leaders from government, civil society and business usually gather.

This year’s report, The Inequality Virus, calls out how, for the first time in recorded history, the COVID-19 pandemic is leading to rising inequality in almost every single country at once. Nearly two million people have died, and hundreds of millions of people are being forced into poverty while many of the wealthiest people and corporations are thriving. Here are a few key findings:

  • It took only 9 months for the 1,000 richest people to recoup their COVID-19 losses. It could take more than a decade for the world’s poorest to recover.
  • The world’s 10 richest men have seen their combined wealth increase by half a trillion dollars since the pandemic began – enough to pay for a vaccine for everyone on the planet.
  • In the US, women’s jobs are 1.8 times more vulnerable to loss than men’s jobs due to this crisis.

Globally, we continue to push governments to fight inequality in all efforts to address COVID.  And here in the US, as you know, we continue to urge Congress and President Biden to pass a multi-trillion-dollar recovery plan that prioritizes workers and families, women, and to fund the fight against COVID-19 internationally.
