This week a federal court delivered a huge win for communities, our climate and wildlife such as polar bears in Alaska’s western Arctic. Reported in the Washington Post, the court found that when the Trump administration rushed its approval of ConocoPhillips’ Willow drilling project, it “failed to adequately analyze its climate impact and […] didn’t specify how polar bears would be protected.” As a result, the drilling project cannot move forward without significant changes.
With yesterday’s decision, President Biden has a chance to forge a better path. Tell him to walk away from Willow oil drilling and support clean energy projects instead.
The Biden administration must now review Willow with a fresh eye. It must reject the prospect of hundreds of millions of barrels of new oil and hundreds of millions of metric tons of additional CO2 emissions, and instead, take strong actions that fulfill Biden’s promises to address climate change, prioritize environmental justice and transition the U.S. to a clean energy future.
