From Faith in Public Life (http://www.faithinpubliclife.org):
On the 57th anniversary of the March on Washington, champions of racial justice are leading a movement from Minneapolis and Kenosha throughout the country. Just as the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. preached from the Lincoln Memorial all those years ago, “now is the time to make real the promises of democracy.”
That’s why our faith calls us to join The Movement for Black Lives in urging Congress to pass the BREATHE Act as a crucial step toward combating anti-Blackness and creating a more just world for all.
Please join us by making a call to your member of Congress urging her/him to co-sponsor the legislation at https://p2a.co/cibFgU9.
The BREATHE Act’s promise is simple: take money from systems of punishment and surveillance that disproportionately harm Black communities and invest in infrastructure that supports growth, learning and equity. We can create a moral budget when we fund schools, affordable housing, culturally competent mental health care and support for people who use drugs. Right now we have the chance to protect our environment, create and sustain community jobs and value the labor of all workers.
As we pray for the recovery of Jacob Blake and act in opposition to police violence, it is time to deepen our moral imagination and advocate for policies like the BREATHE Act that would create the world God wants for all of us.
