Urge Governor-Elect Shapiro to Make Tackling Gun Violence a Top Priority

As Pennsylvania kicks off the 2023 legislative session, we do so under a new governor for the first time in nearly a decade. Governor-elect Josh Shapiro has pledged bold, bipartisan leadership — and we’re going to need every bit of it to tackle our gun violence epidemic that kills 1,700 Pennsylvanians per year.

2022 ended with the Lancaster murders of a dedicated mother and nurse named Courtney Cooper, fatally shot by her boyfriend, and of Luis Oscar Sanchez, a father of two with a third on the way^[1]; with the York City murder of Demetres Lewis, where the city’s police captain believes the annual homicide rate hasn’t been so high in 20 years^[2]; and with a mass shooting in rural Lycoming county that left four people dead by a rifle^[3].

As Pennsylvania’s Attorney General, Josh Shapiro prosecuted gun traffickers and cracked down on ghost guns, noting “gun violence is ravaging our communities.”^[4] He’s right, and it’s time to end this crisis.
