Tell the President: Don’t Defend New Oil Drilling in America’s Arctic

From the Alaska Wilderness League (http://www.alaskawild.org):

This week the International Energy Agency announced that nations worldwide must immediately stop approving new oil and gas fields if we are to avert climate catastrophe. At the same time, the Biden administration elected to defend in court the massive new “Willow” oil project on federally owned lands in northwest Alaska.

Let’s say that again: “We must immediately stop approving new oil and gas fields to avert climate catastrophe.”

Please speak up today at https://secure.everyaction.com/K8I9BCi32EaGNLzK34SiYA2. Tell President Biden to stop defending new oil drilling in America’s Arctic.

As our acting director Kristen Miller told The New York Times, burning oil produced by the “Willow project” over its lifetime would equal the CO2 emissions of 66 coal-fired power plants. And Willow’s infrastructure would pave the way for additional new oil and gas projects in the region.

Not only that, the project would spell disaster for caribou and other local wildlife. Rosemary Ahtuangaruak of the nearby village of Nuiqsut — who was to be featured on our Geography of Hope series earlier this week — told The New York Times the project would divert the normal migration of caribou, hurting the community’s ability to feed families.

President Biden when he took office promised to tackle climate change and address environmental justice. Tell him to stay true to those promises and stop defending new drilling in America’s Arctic.
