Tell Our Senators to Support Continuing $600/Week Unemployment, Other Needed Services During Pandemic

From the Coalition on Human Needs (http://www.chn.org):

Tens of millions of working people have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic, causing near-depression level job losses and a historic contraction of the economy. Through it all, a critical benefit that is keeping people and families afloat has been a $600 weekly boost to unemployment benefits. But because the Senate refused to act, those benefits expired last week!

Now, we’ve learned that the Senate is ready to hold a vote on unemployment benefits as soon as Monday! But the Senate’s initial plan would cut those benefits by $400 a week and leave all other urgent needs out.

When Senators return to their office after the weekend, let’s make sure they have thousands of letters waiting for them, demanding that they reject this proposal.

Write to our Senators right now at https://actionnetwork.org/letters/tell-the-senate-reject-mitch-mcconnells-plan-to-slash-jobless-benefits-for-millions-of-working-people/ demanding they reject a vote for grossly inadequate unemployment benefits—cutting hundreds of dollars each week—and that ignores all the other urgent needs created by the pandemic.

This past week, CHN and our partners directed thousands of phone calls to Senators’ offices, telling them there’s no time to delay. We’re reminding Senators that the $600 unemployment boost is a critical lifeline to millions of families struggling to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads, and that it must be part of a package that provides for health care, education, and all the services that keep people safe at work, school, and at home. If the Senate does not agree to all the help needed to prevent hunger, evictions, and permanent loss of services, the damage to our families and our economy will be huge.

We have to keep fighting! Together, let’s demand the Senate provide people with relief measures that meet the urgency of the moment.

Thank you for your continued help to fight for vulnerable people throughout our country.
