From PennEnvironment (http://www.pennenvironment.org):
The heat wave at the start of July shattered previous record high temperatures by up to 8 degrees Fahrenheit.1 Hundreds of people lost their lives.2 Over a billion marine animals perished in the extreme heat.3
Summer is for warm sun and melting popsicles, not sweltering temperatures and melting powerlines — but this could be the new normal if we don’t get off fossil fuels and tackle global warming.4
The Clean Energy for America Act will create new clean energy incentives and eliminate many fossil fuel subsidies — the taxpayer-funded support we give the fossil fuel industry — but only if we can get it through Congress.
Tell our U.S. senators to support the Clean Energy for America Act and end fossil fuel subsidies at https://pennenvironment.webaction.org/p/dia/action4/common/public/?action_KEY=45478.
The fossil fuel industry receives about $20 billion in subsidies every year.5 Thanks in part to these subsidies, fossil fuels accounted for 74 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in 2019.6
Why are we spending all this money to prop up an industry that’s damaging our health and the planet?
Scientists just proved that this latest heat wave would have been virtually impossible without human-caused climate change. It’s time to stop funding our own destruction and end fossil fuel subsidies.
Forty to 60 percent of oil resources are dependent on subsidies.7 If we strike down these subsidies, renewable energy will expand and become even more competitive compared to expensive, toxic fossil fuels.
According to the International Monetary Fund, just reducing fossil fuel subsidies worldwide would lower carbon emissions by 28 percent and air pollution deaths by 46 percent within four years.8 Imagine the lifesaving impact we could have if we eliminate fossil fuel subsidies altogether.
Create a cleaner, greener future by supporting the Clean Energy for America Act today.
