Tell Our Senators: Extend the Electric Vehicle Tax Credit

posted in: Environment, Uncategorized | 0

From the Union of Concerned Scientists (http://www.ucsusa.org):

Even if you don’t drive an electric vehicle (EV) you can still reap the benefits—they cut toxic air pollution, global warming emissions, and oil use. If you drive an EV, you save money on fuel and maintenance, too. Despite the many benefits of EVs, their upfront cost remains a barrier. That’s why the federal EV tax credit of up to $7,500 per vehicle is so critical.

Unfortunately, each car manufacturer has a limited number of times that the tax credit can be offered to their customers before it is phased out. Some of the most popular EV manufacturers, including GM and Tesla, have already hit that limit, while others, such as Nissan, are swiftly approaching it.

We all benefit from making EVs more affordable—go to https://secure.ucsusa.org/onlineactions/FDnI_5VWCkSuIsqLwFxS9A2 to tell our senators that you support extending the EV tax credit today.

This week, Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Senator Gary Peters (D-MI), and Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) introduced a bill that would increase the cap on EV tax credits, expanding the number of vehicle owners that can benefit from the credit. The federal EV tax credit helps make EVs accessible to more people, increasing the benefits for everyone.

Despite strong bipartisan support, this bill has powerful opponents with deep pockets. For years Koch-funded lobbyists have been outspoken opponents of the EV tax credit and have tried hard to eliminate it while keeping subsidies for oil and gas production on the books. Your voice is needed to ensure this bill gets passed.

Make your voice louder than the fossil fuel lobbyists—ask for our senators’ support today.

The EV tax credit is one of the most important policies that gives drivers access to these clean cars. On top of the benefits to our health and environment, the credit drives innovation, and increased EV sales spurred by the tax credit will continue to drive the price of EVs down.

Tell our senators that you support the EV tax credit.
