Tell PA General Assembly: Fix Emergency Rental Assistance Program & Get Aid to Those Who Need It

From Lutheran Advocacy Ministry in Pennsylvania (https://www.lutheranadvocacypa.org/):

(NOTE: You do not need to be Lutheran to use this tool.)

The evictions moratorium is set to expire at the end of June, even as one-third of Pennsylvania renters have been reported to be behind on payments because of COVID-related hardship. As tenants struggle to pay rent, landlords are often unable to make their own payments. This has far-reaching consequences, particularly for the increasing rate of homelessness among PA youth. Our legislature needs to act quickly to ensure they get the help they need.

Please act today to urge lawmakers to fix the Emergency Rental Assistance Program so that counties are able to get already-allocated federal funds to those in most need before time runs out.

As Lutherans, we are called to care for the most vulnerable amongst us. ELCA social teaching reminds us that to work with and for the homeless and those facing homelessness is to do the work of God. It is vital we continue to advocate for housing relief in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our legislators have a responsibility to ensure that allocated federal monies make their way to the people who need it most. By improving the Pennsylvania Emergency Rental and Utility Assistance Program (ERAP) to align with federal guidance, counties will be able to more rapidly and effectively meet the needs of their residents. Ask your lawmaker to Amend Act 1 to lift the 5% administrative cap on ERAP 1; and when allocating ERAP 2.0 mirror federal requirements and do not impose additional caps or restrictions.

With the moratorium on evictions set to expire in the coming weeks, thousands could be facing eviction or impossible choices affecting their health and that of their families.

Prepare Your Congregation to Meet the Need!

Even as we work to prevent evictions, congregations should prepare to respond to a possible surge in homelessness and be ready to serve neighbors in need. Find resources, including a brief step-by-step guide to get your congregation started, prepared with assistance from some of our ministries with those who have experienced lack of shelter.
