From PennEnvironment (http://www.pennenvironment.org):
Air pollution from fossil fuels alone causes more than 50,000 premature deaths in the United States every single year.1
That’s just the latest reason we need to clean up our air — and taking action to reduce smog pollution is a critical first step.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently updating the Cross-State Air Pollution Rule, which is meant to reduce harmful air pollution.2 The rule is often called the “Good Neighbor Plan,” because it’s designed to limit unhealthy levels of ground-level ozone, or smog, for millions of Americans who live downwind from power plants and industrial facilities.
Smog is formed when industrial emissions from power plants, factories and other sources react with heat and sunlight in the atmosphere. When inhaled, smog irritates our airways, increasing our risk of serious heart and lung diseases.3 The rule requires power plants and other polluting facilities to install and effectively use modern pollution control technologies that will clean up our air and save lives.
Millions of Americans are exposed to unhealthy levels of air pollution, but it doesn’t have to be this way.
