Tell EPA and DOT: Keep Moving Forward with Fuel Efficiency Standards

From Interfaith Power and Light (http://interfaithpowerandlight.org):

For the first time since 1979, carbon pollution from the transportation sector has overtaken electricity production as the greatest contributor to global warming in the U.S. We’ve got to make our cars more fuel efficient, as we build a fossil fuel-free economy.

Rising vehicle pollution is not a failure of technology, as there has been great progress on clean cars and electrification. Recognizing that capacity to clean up our auto fleet, the Obama administration had finalized standards to nearly double fuel efficiency of cars and light duty trucks by Model Year 2025.

But now, the Trump administration and big auto companies want to put us in reverse, by curbing these new fuel efficiency standards before they can even take effect. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and DOT (Department of Transportation) just announced they will begin reconsidering the fuel efficiency standards for cars and passenger trucks. And by “reconsidering” they mean: we are open to rolling back the standards. Let’s make our voices heard.

Tell the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) to keep us moving forward with strong fuel efficiency standards at http://salsa4.salsalabs.com/o/50836/p/dia/action4/common/public/?action_KEY=23089.

It is an outrage and a moral failure for policy makers to try to backtrack on these critical standards. Automakers have already shown they can meet the standards and at a lower cost than even the EPA projected. Weakening the standards only benefits the short-term profits of automakers — at the expense of the American consumer and the planet.

IPL supporters joined millions of other Americans to secure these standards in 2012. Americans deserve access to the latest technology that will save money, cut pollution, and save lives. The new standards when fully implemented are projected to save consumers 1.7 trillion at the pump and $8,000 per vehicle. Millions of people are harmed by poor air quality from vehicle pollution every day, especially lower-income families who tend to live closer to major transportation corridors.  As people of faith, we must stand up for Creation, for our principles, and demand that car companies do their part to clean up our air and stop global warming.

Tell  EPA & DOT that these standards are working and that you oppose rollbacks. We need innovation, not excuses from automakers.
