The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is taking steps to improve public health protections from toxic perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by setting a Maximum Contamination Level (MCL) for them in drinking water. PFAS are a class of chemicals that have been widely used in commercial and industrial processes since the 1940s. This class of chemicals includes more than 3,000 substances used in a variety of industrial and consumer products that are stain and water replant. In Pennsylvania, the largest source of contamination is from fire fighting foam that contains PFAS that has run off of sites and into waterways. Contamination sites have been identified across Pennsylvania, including military bases in Bucks and Montgomery County as well as airports in Harrisburg and Pittsburgh.
In the absence of its own regulations, Pennsylvania follows the non-enforceable guideline of 70 ppt set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The federal government’s lapsed standards have led 10 other states to move forward with stronger regulations to protect their residents. Now it is time for Pennsylvania to follow suit. Contact DEP TODAY and tell them to put in place a strong MCL for PFAS in drinking water.
