Tell Congress to Defend Clean Cars

From Interfaith Power and Light (http://interfaithpowerandlight.org):

Did you hear the news? Last week, the EPA announced that it was going after California’s ability to set standards for cleaner cars. California has had the ability to set stricter than national vehicle emission standards for decades and that permission or “waiver” has never been revoked in its 50-year history. This decision will also impact the 13 other states and DC that follow the California standards, and everyone who cares about clean air. But most of all, it affects children, the elderly, asthma sufferers and others who will be gravely affected by heightened air pollution.

Tell your congressmember to stand up for states’ rights and clean air at http://salsa4.salsalabs.com/o/50836/p/dia/action4/common/public/?action_KEY=26505.

The EPA move comes even after a bipartisan coalition of 24 governors asked for one strong, national clean car standard and support for preserving state authority to protect citizens from vehicle pollution.  AND after 17 automakers sent a letter to the administration encouraging a compromise solution with California, and four major automakers agreed to a compromise deal with California to build less polluting vehicles.

Yet the EPA is moving ahead to undermine states that are addressing air pollution and reducing oil consumption. This is an egregious affront to our communities and to good faith efforts made by states and car companies. As people of faith and conscience, we must speak out against reckless endangerment of our neighbors’ health and of the stability of our climate.

Urge your congressmember to defend the Clean Car Standards in Congress.

By scrapping America’s clean car standards, the EPA is putting human health at risk and forcing families to pay more at the pump. It would ensure huge increases in global warming pollution, higher costs at the pump, and devastating health impacts for the most vulnerable among us. The only winner will be Big Oil.

Please, reach out to your congressmember today.
