Tell Congress People in Detention/Facing Deportation Deserve Legal Representation

From the Vera Institute of Justice (https://www.vera.org/):

Too often, people who are immigrants are detained and deported simply because they can’t afford an attorney. Of the more than 1.25 million people with pending cases in the immigration court system – 500,000 lack representation.

People who are immigrants are our community members. They are our friends, neighbors, colleagues, and family. To leave anyone without adequate support and representation is immoral and unethical. That’s why Vera, along with more than 100 of our partners, demand a nationwide immigration public defense system.

The U.S. immigration system routinely expects people who are immigrants with no representation to navigate a convoluted maze of outdated rules and procedures. This process creates unfair detention that tears families apart and places people who are immigrants back in life-threatening circumstances they have tried to escape.

Add your name to ensure that all people facing detention and deportation have a fair day in court!

No one should be forced to leave their friends, family, jobs, and community just because they couldn’t afford a lawyer. Anyone who is legally allowed to stay should not be deported.
