George Floyd. Breonna Taylor. Walter Scott. Michael Brown. This list of unarmed blacks killed by police continues to grow. More must be done to not only hold the killers responsible but to stop the killing before it happens.
Several pieces of legislation hold the potential to take important steps in reducing police violence. Most important is establishing clear guidelines for the use of force. The PEACE Act would raise the standard for use of force to a “last resort” and create incentives for states and localities to adopt the federal standard.
