Urge Your Rep to Support Overturning Citizens United

From Common Cause (http://www.commoncause.org):

Corporations and special interest groups are spending BIG in our elections to make sure they get their way. And thanks to bad Supreme Court rulings like the Citizens United decision, they can do it all secretly — and without limit.

This dark money has disastrous effects on our democracy. When big donors put politicians in their back pocket, they get to speak over the rest of us — bending our lawmakers to their will and passing laws that benefit themselves at our expense.

But right now, a constitutional amendment (H.J.Res.2) is moving through Congress that would OVERTURN the Citizens United decision — putting reasonable limits on how much corporations can spend in our elections.

Your representative needs to hear from you! Call 1-866-937-7983 and tell them to cosponsor the Democracy for All amendment to overturn Citizens United. Go to https://actionnetwork.org/forms/log-your-call-overturn-citizens-united/ for a script and to report what happened. Alternatively, you can call your rep directly—find contact information at http://www.house.gov.

Here’s an idea of what to say: “My name is [NAME] and I live in [TOWN]. I believe that elected officials should be accountable to We the People, not big corporations and special interests. That’s why I urge you to become a cosponsor of the Democracy for All amendment.”

The American people want better schools, better healthcare, better jobs, and a more equitable society. But action by the government on these issues is constantly stalled — because it conflicts with the interests of corporations superpowered by the Citizens United decision.

To make our democracy work for ALL of us — and ensure our government responds to the will of the people, not the mega-donors — we must overturn Citizens United.

This can’t wait — call 1-866-937-7983 NOW and tell your representative to sign on as a cosponsor of the Democracy for All amendment.
