On October 30, the New Deal for New Americans Act, sponsored by U.S. Representatives Grace Meng (NY), Jesús “Chuy” García (IL), and Pramila Jayapal (WA), was introduced. This affirmative, solutions-focused bill will empower immigrants and refugees to fully belong and thrive in our diverse communities and freely contribute to our shared social, economic and civic life.

The New Deal for New Americans Act launches a national immigrant and refugee integration strategy in coordination with state and local communities.

If enacted, the bill will:

  • Promote naturalization and civic engagement for those eligible; and fund the legal support they need to navigate the complex immigration system;
  • Expand English classes to meet the social and economic needs of immigrants and refugees;
  • Raise the refugee admissions floor and rebuild our resettlement programs;
  • Train New Americans for available jobs to fuel their self-sufficiency and our economy.

“The senseless cruelty of today’s myopic immigration policies are a total waste of resources and human potential. Economists everywhere have proven again and again that immigrants and refugees contribute more to our nation than they take. When this bill becomes law, it will help unify us, make us stronger and supercharge New Americans’ investment in our nation.” said Gustavo Torres, Executive Director of CASA and NPNA Board Member.

“There are nearly 71 million displaced people in the world today, which makes the U.S. refugee admissions cuts unconscionable. Each day, 34,000 people leave everything behind in the hope of finding safety and a better tomorrow. I am one of them and I am proud to support the New Deal for New Americans Act which opens the doors to those seeking safety and freedom in the U.S.” said Basma Alawee, Refugee Organizer for We Are All America (WAAA) at the Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC).
