Just as science is needed to ensure that policies are effective, a healthy democracy is needed to ensure that they are fair. But as we know, money often equals access, and access equals influence. When the people and corporations behind the unlimited money flooding into our elections process have goals that don’t align with scientific understanding, we see policy results that may not be in the public’s interest.
It’s clear that the Supreme Court decision on Citizens United expanded the influence of secret money on our political system—drowning out those voices in favor of science-based policies, our health, and the public interest.
