Social Media Manager—Project on Government Oversight

Founded in 1981, the Project on Government Oversight (POGO) is a nonpartisan independent watchdog that champions good government reforms. POGO’s investigations into corruption, misconduct, and conflicts of interest achieve a more effective, accountable, open, and ethical federal government.

We are seeking qualified and passionate applicants for a Social Media Manager position in support of the above mission and work to be part of POGO’s growing communications team.

The Social Media Manager will report directly to the Chief Communications Strategist and will be responsible for creating daily social media content for organization accounts, monitoring online conversations surrounding POGO’s issues, track key influencers and top reporters online, and developing compelling graphics and video.

The ideal candidate will have 1-3 years of experience working in the fields of social media, communications, journalism, marketing or public relations, and commitment to the aforementioned issue areas.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Drafting and distributing the organizations social media content to go out over its channels.
  • Monitor social media coverage and conversations on the issues important to POGO’s work in order to identify key opportunities for engagement, this includes following key reporters, allied organizations, and other influencers.
  • Create compelling graphics, video and other dynamic content to be used over the organization and expert accounts.
  • Develop, customize, and utilize social media analytics to measure and improve the work of our organization and experts in reaching and engaging target audiences.
  • Create effective social media ads on organization platforms in order to build and engage audiences.
  • Stay up to date on the latest trends and best practices for social media platforms and tools and update the communications team.
  • Assist with strategizing long-term issue advocacy or supporter/donor digital campaigns.
  • Assist in training experts to use social media platforms effectively in advancing their work.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Advertising, or other applicable field, or demonstrated equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of experience working in a social media capacity. Experience working as a Hill, government, or NGO communications staffer, is a plus.
  • Understanding and experience with graphic design best practices and tools, such as Photoshop, InDesign, and Canva.
  • Understanding and experience with content marketing, social media & digital advertising.
  • Ability to create effective and engaging content with an appropriate organizational tone and nonpartisan voice, with particular attention to nuance.
  • Strong writing, editing, communications, and presentation skills.
  • A creative and strategic ability to frame ideas, develop stories and synthesize complex policy issues in a way to engage a wide variety of audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience in public interest communications, public relations or advertising.
  • Excellent news sense and political savvy.
  • A proven record of accomplishment managing a fast-paced, multi-faceted workload involving social media tools.
  • Proven track record as a strong team player, in team building, and in project management skills.
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness and flexibility in approach to project assignments.
  • Understanding of social media data analytics.
  • Experience with social media listening tools, such as Crowdtangle, Sysomos, and Attentive.ly, is a plus.

This position is supervised by the Chief Communications Strategist.

Compensation: Competitive salary for a nonprofit commensurate with experience. Benefits currently include health insurance, dental plan, retirement contribution once eligible, life insurance, and short-term disability coverage, subject to the terms established by the insurance providers.
