From PennEnvironment (http://www.pennenvironment.org):

PennEnvironment’s Research & Policy Center has released its newest report Solar on Superstores. This new report found that putting solar panels on the rooftops of big box and grocery stores like Walmart and Target offers an incredible opportunity for solar energy growth in Pennsylvania. Solar on Superstores showed that Pennsylvania ranks 9th in the nation for potential solar power generation from big-box stores’ rooftops.

You can check out the full report and our press release on our website.

To release our report’s findings, we held a virtual news conference over Zoom where we were joined by reporters from WITF, PNS, NextPittsburgh, TribLive and CBS21. So far, we’ve seen news stories covering the report on PNS, NextPittsburgh and BCTV.

Seen in the photos above, we were excited to be joined at our news conference by Marian Moskowitz, Chair of the Chester County Board of Commissioners; Liz Robinson, Executive Director of Philadelphia Solar Energy Association; and Dr. Ruth McDermitt Levy from the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments. You can view a recording of the event on our Facebook page.

Solar energy is essential in our transition to a 100% renewable energy society, and getting ourselves off of dirty fossil fuels. Solar on Superstores shows that Pennsylvania could reduce the state’s overall global warming pollution by nearly 2 million metric tons of CO2, which is equivalent to taking more than 400,000 cars off of the road.

Big companies in Pennsylvania, such as Walmart, have the chance to lead the way in this renewable energy transition. There are 1,145 Walmarts in Pennsylvania, all of which have big, flat, unobstructed roofs that are ideal for generating solar energy.

Pennsylvanians want and need a cleaner, healthier future, powered by abundant renewable energy and big box stores like Walmart have the opportunity to to the lead in this transition towards 100% renewable energy. Putting solar panels on the rooftops of big-box stores across the state will give Pennsylvania the chance to become a leader in solar and renewable energy.
