From the Evangelical Environmental Network (http://www.creationcare.org):
For over 20 years we have defended the Endangered Species Act. The last major threat was back in 1996 during the Gingrich Revolution. EEN’s efforts — including a press conference with a cougar, which landed us on ABC World News Tonight — were decisive in defeating efforts to gut the Act.
Back then Cal DeWitt, the elder statesman of our movement, called the Act the “Noah’s Ark” of species protection. That’s still true today.
Unfortunately, today’s threat is even more ominous, as opponents control the White House and both chambers of Congress. There’s a recklessness in the air, and it is trying to extinguish God’s threatened and endangered creatures from the Earth.
Currently, over 10 laws have been introduced in Congress and numerous regulatory changes have been proposed by this Administration.
Where God’s other creatures urgently need your help today is in opposing two proposed rules or revised regulations by this Administration to gut the Endangered Species Act.
Normally, we keep our Action Alerts to one request for action. However, in this case there are just too many threats. So we are asking you to take two actions. Both are directed to the Interior Department, providing them with your public comments on two proposed revised regulations to the Endangered Species Act. It’s fine if your comments are very similar.
- The first proposed revised regulation is entitled: “Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; Revision of the Regulations for Listing Species and Designating Critical Habitat.”
With this change they would completely undermine the law by allowing economic considerations to determine whether to provide protections. Further, this proposal could make it much more difficult to take climate change into account as to whether a species is threatened or endangered. Act now at http://www.congressweb.com/NRPE/14/.
- The second proposed change for you to oppose is entitled: “Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants; Revision of the Regulations for Prohibitions to Threatened Wildlife and Plants.”
Currently species classified as “threatened” are given the same protections as those classified as “endangered.” Why? So they won’t become endangered, and much closer to extinction! This is, of course, the purpose of the law. Act now at http://www.congressweb.com/NRPE/15/.
These two proposed revised regulations by this Administration strike at the very heart of the Endangered Species Act.
Our message for both is simple: As Christians, called to be good stewards, we oppose these proposed revised regulations of the Endangered Species Act, which would completely undermine the law.
Act Now.
