Act Now to Prevent PA Withholding of Funds from Sanctuary Cities

posted in: Immigration, Uncategorized | 0

A vote is expected on PA S.B. 10 which would withhold ALL state grant money from sanctuary cities unless they comply with Trump’s immigration actions. It’ll have to go back to the House for approval of the amendments in it, but may go quickly. It’ll be up to Gov. Wolf to veto then.

Here are some talking points if you are willing to call your Pennsylvania STATE (this isn’t a federal bill) senator as soon as possible.

To find out who your state legislators are: http://www.pasen.gov/

Talking points:

  • distracts police from their beats and their work on more serious crimes.
  • increases costs on strapped local police budgets
  • makes undocumented immigrants who are witnesses or victims of crimes much less likely to speak to police or report a crime
  • creates a relationship of distrust between marginalized communities and the police, thus endangering the safety of police
  • it’s contrary to our core, most cherished American values.

Sanctuary cities protect hardworking members of communities and keeps families together – it allows local law enforcement to focus on individuals who are actually committing crimes instead of using much needed local police resources to arrest and detain individuals who are not committing crimes – it builds trust between community members and police – they provide protection for families who might have faced persecution or danger in other countries – they create jobs in the communities – undocumented residents work and pay taxes even though they are not eligible for benefits.

Additionally, PA House Republicans have introduced (it’s in committee now) a bill that would strip state funding from colleges that refuse to report students who are in violation of Trump’s immigration actions (but it’ll take some time to get through the legislature if it gets out of committee). It’s HB 14.

And remember the rally/March this coming weekend: Sunday February 5, 2-7 PM at the Capitol, 3rd Street. Sounds like it will be a gathering and a March.

From Facebook:  Rally at the PA State Capitol building in Harrisburg PA to show solidarity with our Immigrant brothers and sisters. At the present time there are families being held in detention centers around the country for people who are fleeing their war torn and crime infested countries for a better life with their children. This is an Immigrants’ Rights Rally and March for Immigrants’ Rights. NO PERSON IS ILLEGAL.
