Help Pass the Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act

From Amnesty International USA (http://www.amnestyusa.org):

A bill was JUST reintroduced in Congress that could radically transform the U.S. detention system for the better.

Representative Pramila Jayapal is leading the reintroduction of the Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act. If passed, this bill would end mandatory detention; eliminate the use of private prison facilities for immigration detention; and protect parents, caregivers, and people who are at risk from the threat of detention.

We already know that the current immigration detention system holds a horrific track record when it comes to human rights — now, we can finally write more human rights protections into law.

But we need to get this bill passed. We’re still early in the legislative session, and there’s a huge amount of competition for attention on critical legislative priorities. Your voice can help elevate this legislation to the level of concern it demands.

Urge our two Senators and your Representative to support the Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act now at https://act.amnestyusa.org/page/78924/action/1.

As you read this, thousands of people remain in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention. Many are trapped for weeks, months, even years, and without easy access to attorneys, as they navigate the complicated legal process of pursuing asylum and other protections in the U.S.

If passed, the Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act would transform the lives of thousands of people in detention, and bring our country toward a more just and humane immigration system — one where immigrants and asylum-seekers are treated with dignity and respect.

That’s why we can’t waste any time in building public pressure to get it passed.

Your elected leaders need to hear from you — and with the click of a button, you can send your message to each of them right now.

Help us keep up the pressure and show our lawmakers that we demand urgent action for asylum-seekers and immigrants.

Together, we can pass this critical legislation and help to ensure that no one else will be subjected to the abuses that so many people and families have faced.
