PA Union of the Homeless Forming—Learn More

posted in: Human Needs, Uncategorized | 0

The National Union of the Homeless is putting out a call for people interested in helping to form a statewide PA Union of the Homeless. For more background and history on the National Union of the Homeless, please see here.

Homelessness is the most visible expression of poverty and, given the growing impoverishment of the working class, the crisis of homelessness will engulf more and more of the working class.

Organizing the PA Union of the Homeless is open to all those with current or past experiences of homelessness, including people living in shelters, as well as:

  • Renters at risk of eviction
  • Homeowners at risk of foreclosure
  • Individuals/families living with relatives, in cars or other unstable housing situations
  • Individuals/faith leaders/social workers/health workers in regular ongoing contact with poor and dispossessed people (i.e., you operate a food bank, free food program, health clinic or mutual aid program).

Our organizing program will include tactics for organizing and defending the rights of people in homeless encampments, fighting eviction and foreclosure, housing takeovers, and – crucially – leadership development and political education about the root causes of homelessness and poverty.

The PA Union of the Homeless is a statewide formation that will involve people of all backgrounds living in urban, town, rural and suburban settings.

Please fill out this short survey to express interest in being involved in this effort and we will follow up with you to set up a meeting.

Please see below for the mission of the National Union of the Homeless:

NUH MISSION STATEMENT:

The heart and soul of the National Union of the Homeless is to commit our lives to ending homelessness and poverty and to work tirelessly for the human right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, for social and economic justice for all. We dedicate ourselves to raising the awareness of our sisters and brothers, to planning a sustained struggle and to building an organization that can obtain freedom through revolutionary perseverance. We pledge to deepen our personal commitment to end all forms of exploitation, racism, sexism, and abuse. True solidarity demands that we create not only the new society, but also the new human being.

Feel free to pass this message along to others who would be interested in building a Homeless Union in Pennsylvania!
