On September 5, President Trump’s ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, a decision which jeopardizes the livelihood and security of over 800,000 young undocumented DREAMers. On that day he required that EVERY SINGLE one of the 157,000 current DACA holders whose DACA enrollment expires between now and March 5 to re-enroll by October 5, 2017. This October 5 re-enrolment deadline is cruel, arbitrary, and unworkable!

The Department of Homeland Security has decreed that ALL 154,000 DACA holders whose DACA permit expires between September 5, 2017 and March 5, 2018 must re-enroll in the program by October 5, 2017. This deadline is arbitrary, unworkable, and cruel. Many DACA holders are unaware of this sudden deadline, and will not be able to raise the $495 on such short notice. The community groups providing legal assistance to DACA holders will be overwhelmed. This requirement means that 5,133 DACA applications must be submitted every single day this month, 214 every hour, all night long. At least 40,000 will miss this this deadline.

The October 5 deadline for DACA re-enrollment is a “poison pill” that guarantees that tens of thousands of DACA holders will lose their legal status, their work permits, and their protection from deportation.
