October Update: Lancaster Against Pipelines

See You in Court! Mon. 10/29

Almost one year ago, one hundred people gathered on the cornfield of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ to put their bodies between Williams’ excavators and our children’s future. Twenty-three of our friends, ages 16 to 86, were arrested that day while singing songs & holding hands.

On October 29 @ 9AM, seven of those arrested—all pleading “not guilty”—will be at the Lancaster County Courthouse for a pre-trial hearing. We’ll be arguing that Civil Disobedience is the only option left for those of us seeking to protect our constitutional right to clean air & water. Save the date, and watch for more details.

Bold Sisters: Supreme Court & Solar Farm

Any day now, the Adorers of the Blood of Christ will be filing their Appeal to the US Supreme Court, challenging Williams’ seizure of their land for a climate-warming fossil fuel pipeline in direct violation of their religious convictions.

In the meantime, the Sisters, in close partnership with LAP, continue moving forward with plans for a Solar Farm in Columbia. The project highlights Lancaster County’s commitment to a sustainable future despite the gas industry’s stranglehold on our state government. Follow LAP’s Facebook for updates.

Rapho Homes Destroyed, Thanks to Williams Gas Company

In a front-page story earlier this month, LNP reported on the life-threatening flood that occurred in Rapho Township after Williams Pipeline Company removed the community’s storm water basin against the direct orders of township officials. The catastrophic flooding destroyed six homes. Thankfully, no lives were lost.

Despite this debacle—on top of the pending Supreme Court Appeal, the recent pipeline explosion in western PA, and unrestored topsoil along the pipeline corridor—Williams is desperately pushing for FERC’s approval to get their pipeline in-service any day now. Amid all the uncertainty, FERC has refused to give the green light. Let’s do all we can to ensure it stays that way as long as possible.

Ellen Gerhart Released from Jail

After spending two months in the Centre County Correctional Facility for peacefully challenging Sunoco’s Mariner East II on her own property, Ellen Gerhart was finally released from jail this week. Her horror story reminds us that the gas industry has lots of help when it comes to seizing our land, endangering our communities, and contaminating the environment. Our politicians, law enforcement, and courts at every level are failing spectacularly in their duty to protect our health and safety. The best way to honor Ellen is to join our courage to hers in this grassroots struggle for environmental justice. Thank you, Ellen!
