This Week: Urge Congress to Pass a Clean DREAM Act

From the Interfaith Immigration Coalition (http://www.interfaithimmigration.org):

Now through Saturday, November 4th, communities of faith across the country are joining a week of action to stand with dreamers and uplift the urgency of passing a clean Dream Act of 2017. Last month, President Trump terminated the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, turning our nation’s back on undocumented immigrant youth who are valued members of our communities and threatening the sanctity of family unity.

We are inviting our faith partners to join this important Praying with Dreamers #Faith4Dream Week so that together, we put the faithful call to love our neighbors into action. Congress must hear from us this week and every week until Congress passes a clean Dream Act with a pathway to citizenship.

Tell Congress to Pass a Clean Dream Act Now!

*Please call 3 times to be connected to your 1 Representative and your 2 Senators; alternatively, you can call directly—find contact information in the following locations:

Sample Script:I’m your constituent from [City, State]. As a person of faith and a constituent, I support dreamers. I strongly oppose President Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. DACA has provided nearly 800,000 immigrant youth the opportunity to work, raise a family, and pursue their dreams. Congress must do everything in your power to protect immigrant youth – I am calling to urge the [Senator/Representative] to support a clean passage of the Dream Act of 2017 (S.1615 / H.R.3440).”

Please also tweet your Senators/Representatives (find all of PA Members of Congress below) and @realDonaldTrump. Click here for social media guidance, and here’s sample social media posts:

  • Faith communities call on [SENATOR/REPRESENTATIVE] to pass a clean #DreamActNow! Immigrant youth are #HereToStay #Faith4Dream
  • My faith community stands with immigrant neighbors & call on [SENATOR/REPRESENTATIVE] to pass a clean #DreamActNow #Faith4Dream
  • Faith communities urge [SENATOR/REPRESENTATIVE] to pass a clean #DreamActNow & protect immigrant youth #HereToStay #Faith4Dream
  • After making your phone calls, here are four more actions we invite you to take:

Join the Virtual Prayer Chain: Record a video of yourself holding a printed, filled out #Faith4Dream signPDFPNG. Upload your video to Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook with the hashtag #Faith4Dream and tag the Interfaith Immigration Coalition (@interfaithimm). Don’t forget to tweet at your Members of Congress!

Organize a Dream Sabbath: A Dream Sabbath can be dedicated time during a regular weekly worship service to having immigrant youth share their stories and asking congregants to take action in support of the Dream Act, or it can be a vigil, meeting with your Senators and Representatives, etc. The Dream Sabbath toolkit can be found at here (PDF) and here (Word). Please make sure to put your event on this map: bit.ly/DreamSabbathMap by the end of October.

Amplify your voice on social media: Use the hashtags #Faith4Dream and #DreamActNow. Check out Faith in Public Life’s digital resources here. You can also download generic graphics and general social media language supporting the Dream Act.

Write for Media: Elevate the public call by publishing a letter to the editor before the end of October in support of the Dream Act of 2017. Find a draft letter to the editor and local media outlets to submit your letter to at: https://act.fcnl.org/lte/speak-out-dream-act/. Faith leaders are invited to write longer opinion editorials, especially in TN, ME, NV, ND, UT, AZ, OH, FL, SC, NJ, PA, and NY.
