Say No to Funding for Family Separation or Imprisonment

From Moms Rising (https://www.momsrising.org/):

As many of us were winding down holiday celebrations, we were horrified to see photos of our government tear gassing mothers and toddlers who are seeking asylum at our border. The cruelty is breathtaking.

Our country has the capacity and policies in place to process asylum seeking families in a humane manner. Instead, the administration is asking Congress for more money so that they can implement increasingly cruel practices to target immigrants both inside the U.S. and at our border.

Tell the U.S. Congress to stand up against these cruel practices and to hold the administration accountable by not financing the administration’s cruelty to immigrant families at https://action.momsrising.org/sign/No_to_funding_for_family_separation_and_imprisonment!

Right now members of Congress are discussing year end budget negotiations, which will be voted on in the coming weeks The administration wants to use your tax dollars to finance an anti-immigrant agenda in the government’s fiscal year 2018 budget, all while making devastating cuts to things like health and education that are critical to healthy, thriving communities.

We can stop this! In fact, thanks to the advocacy of people like you, Congress put a halt on the administration’s request for 1 billion dollars of additional funding for immigration enforcement in a short term spending bill! [1] [2] Congress must take the next step and say no to further funding expansion in the end of the year spending negotiations! [3][4]

Now is the time to make our voices heard!

Congress can put the brakes on the administration’s anti-immigrant agenda by refusing to grant funding for the wall, increased family detention, and wasteful militarization of the border. Customs and Border Patrol, (CBP), and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, (ICE), have been vastly overspending their multi-billion dollar budgets with the expectation that Congress will continue to finance their agenda. Members of Congress have spoken up against child separation and the mistreatment of asylum seeking families at the border, while simultaneously funding aggressive immigration enforcement that harms families and children. Congress can and should act as a check on these cruel policies, starting with this budget.

The wall is not just a hateful symbol of exclusion and a waste of billions of dollars that could be used instead to improve the health and education of children, it also will be a disaster for the environment, killing wildlife by interfering with the migration patterns and impeding access to food and water causing dangerous flooding; and will endanger the lives of border residents.

For all these reasons, we want all members of Congress to weigh in with leadership to let them know it’s past time to stop wasting taxpayer dollars on the abusive and deadly immigration enforcement system. Stopping the flow of money is critical to stopping Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda. Congress can and should act as a check on the administration’s cruel and expensive immigration policies and practices, starting with this budget.

Tell Congress that we want our tax dollars used to strengthen our families and communities by investing in education, housing, nutrition and health care programs that provide opportunity and increase well-being.

Join us in calling on Congress to say NO to wasting taxpayer dollars on an abusive and deadly immigration enforcement system. Let them know that America’s families do not want our tax dollars that could be used to improve our schools, childcare, and health care, being used to carry out the anti-immigrant policies of the administration!!

The more people who make their voices heard, the bigger impact we can have. Thank you for all you do. Together, we are a powerful voice for families!

P.S. In addition to teargas at the border, the Thanksgiving holiday saw an escalation in the Administration’s disregard for sensitive locations as ICE agents lured Samuel Oliver-Bruno, a Durham, NC immigrant seeking deferred deportation to care for his seriously ill wife, out of the church where he has been living in sanctuary for the last 11 months. He was ambushed by plainclothes ICE agents and dragged out the back door of his local immigration office to an unmarked van. He was rapidly transferred to detention in Georgia where his petition for deferred deportation was quickly denied and an order for his removal issued. Stand up for Samuel and all of those immigrants living in sanctuary nationwide by making a quick phone call now. https://action.momsrising.org/call/stand-samuel-and-immigrants-sanctuary-nationwide/?t=12&akid=11537%2E2540879%2EDt2W_7
