Nevada Supreme Court Reaffirms Public Funds Can’t Be Diverted to Private Schools

From Americans United for Separation of Church and State (http://www.au.org):

For decades, Americans United has worked to support that principle – taxpayer dollars should go only to public schools that welcome all students, not sectarian institutions that serve only children with the “right” religion.

Earlier this year, Nevada legislators passed the broadest voucher program in the nation, a scheme that would have done incalculable damage to the public school system.

This week, in a case brought by Americans United and allied groups, the Nevada Supreme Court reaffirmed that funds meant for public schools can’t be diverted to private institutions.

Nevada’s top court ruled that the plan clearly violates a section of the state constitution that says that money raised for public schools must be spent on public schools. Because of our court victory, the voucher plan has been brought to a screeching halt.
