Tell Congress to Make SNAP a Priority in Next COVID-19 Package

From the Food Research and Action Center (http://www.frac.org):

Today, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) issued a press statement on priorities for an interim emergency COVID-19 package. Included in that list was a “15 percent increase to the maximum SNAP benefit to help put food on the table.”

On April 6, Reps. Jim McGovern (D-MA), Marcia Fudge (D-OH), Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) led a letter signed by 136 of their colleagues urging House and Senate leaders to prioritize anti-hunger efforts and strengthen SNAP in the next COVID-19 legislative relief package.

Let’s keep the pressure on.

Action Needed: Contact your Members of Congress (House and Senate) and urge them to support Speaker Pelosi and Democratic Leader Schumer in putting SNAP among the priority programs for any COVID-19 package.

If your Member of Congress signed the House letter, thank them and urge them to continue to speak out on the need to include SNAP priorities in any COVID-19 legislative packages.

For House Members who did not sign the letter, and for all Senators, urge them to support SNAP in any future COVID-19 relief packages. Any COVID-19 economic recovery package must build on SNAP’s economic stimulus effects by

  1.   boosting SNAP maximum benefitsby 15 percent;
  2.   increasing the minimum SNAP benefit from $16 to $30; and
  3.   suspending all SNAP administrative rules that would terminate or weaken benefits.

These temporary provisions must continue until the economy improves.
