Back in July the ACLU and the Education Law Center filed a lawsuit against the Lancaster school district for diverting older refugee students with limited English proficiency to a privately operated alternative school, Phoenix Academy, rather than allowing them to attend the district’s regular high school. Following a five day trial a federal judge ruled on August 29th that the School District of Lancaster violated the civil rights of the students.
“Our refugee clients have lived lives of unimaginable hardship, and they are way overdue for a break,” said Witold Walczak, legal director of the ACLU of Pennsylvania and one of the lawyers for the students. “We are thrilled the court recognized that school districts have a legal obligation to provide refugees and other immigrants with equal educational opportunities until age twenty-one.” Read more here.
