Diapers in Detention: It’s Time to ShutDownBerks!

From the Pennsylvania Immigration and Citizenship Coalition (http://www.paimmigrant.org):

As many of you know, mothers currently being held at the Berks Family Detention Center launched a hunger strike three weeks ago to demand their immediate release. These women have faced threats from staff and ICE officials – everything from taking away computer Diapers-sistersprivileges to having their children taken away – and yet they stand strong, and remain hopeful that they and their children will soon be free.

On Monday, August 29, 2016 Sisters of Saint Francis of Philadelphia, UUPLAN and allies convened at the ICE office in Philadelphia to hold a “baby shower” for the many children currently being held in detention. The group joined similar Diapers in Detention events taking place around the country this week. The hope was to deliver them to ICE’s Thomas Decker and ask for the immediate release of the families. Unfortunately, the group was told by security that they could not see him and that he will call them back for an appointment.

“Sisters of Saint Francis are trying to close Berks Detention Center because detaining mothers and children is against the Catholic and Franciscan beliefs. Berks has already been declared uncertified for housing the families, therefore it should be shut down immediately.” – Sister Domenica Lo Bianco, Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia
