Invitation to Host a Dialogue about The Death Penalty: Screen “In the Executioner’s Shadow”

From Pennsylvanians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (http://www.pa-abolitionists.org/):

Pennsylvanians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (PADP) invites you to co-host an event focusing on the death penalty. The tragedy at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life Synagogue, the election season, the release of the bipartisan governmental study of PA’s capital punishment, and more, are stirring the desire for deeper conversations and reflection. We’re offering to help create the environment to do just that.

We’re co-hosting events with school, faith, and community groups. The 90-minute program features the 40 minute documentary film In the Executioner’s Shadow, a short presentation by someone from PADP about PA’s death penalty, and a Q & A session. Through Human Rights Day, December 10th, PADP will cover the $75 screening cost.

Your responsibilities as a co-host are to:

  • secure a venue with the capability to stream video. PADP will help walk you through a test beforehand;
  • spread the word with your group members and join with PADP in publicizing the event  PADP will help with publicity and will provide a knowledgeable facilitator.

IN THE EXECUTIONER’S SHADOW casts a penetrating look at the consequences of the death penalty through three powerful stories – the rare perspective of a former state executioner who comes within days of executing an innocent person; a Boston Marathon bombing victim who struggles to decide what justice really means; and the parents of a murder victim who choose to fight for the life of their daughter’s killer. As the battle to overturn capital punishment comes to a head in the U.S., this provocative film challenges viewers to question their deepest beliefs about justice. “It is the potential of this documentary to move us toward a more enlightened society that excites me about this work.”  —Benjamin Jealous, former NAACP President
