From Oxfam America (http://www.oxfamamerica.org):
From the hunger crisis in West Africa to Hurricane Matthew that has wiped out nearly 80 percent of crops in Haiti, the biggest challenges facing our world rarely make the nightly news. Many people aren’t even aware that these crises are happening.
But Sandra, you have the opportunity to bring issues of poverty and hunger to light for your community – find out more about hosting an Oxfam America Hunger Banquet at https://www.oxfamamerica.org/take-action/events/hunger-banquet.
For more than 40 years, in schools, homes, congregations and community centers across the country, Oxfam supporters have been holding Oxfam America Hunger Banquet® events.
If you’ve never been to one, it’s a unique dining experience that will change your perspective on global hunger and change the world in the process.
We provide the materials. You provide the people. Our world provides the challenge.
Serve up a memorable meal and inspire change – host an Oxfam America Hunger Banquet.
Oxfam is tackling the root causes of hunger every day in a variety of ways – and we invite you to join us. By hosting an Oxfam America Hunger Banquet you are joining the movement of people who won’t live with poverty.
How does it work? At an Oxfam America Hunger Banquet, guests take on the roles of people who are well-fed, hungry, or somewhere in between, randomly drawing tickets that assign them to different income levels. Some receive a filling dinner, while others eat a simple meal or share sparse portions of rice and water. Participants may even take on the roles of real people from around the world to see what it’s like to be in someone else’s shoes.
You and your dining companions will have unique insight into what it feels like to struggle against a cycle of poverty, how sustainable solutions can help a village feed itself for years to come, and more.
No matter what they’re served, people talk about this event as a deeply moving experience. They leave with a greater understanding of the causes of poverty, hunger, and injustice – and with the tools and knowledge to change it.
Whether it’s your book club, your faith group, your college dorm, or your child’s class at school, help fight hunger by hosting an Oxfam America Hunger Banquet in your community!
Find out why organizers and guests alike call Oxfam America Hunger Banquets a “memorable,” “powerful” and “life-changing” experience. This year, the hunger crisis and food shortages in West Africa and Haiti make the message even more meaningful. Host a meal in your community, and see why this event continues to inspire thousands of people year after year.
