A new report from our Research Assistant Intern, Brian Summersgill, highlights trends in homelessness throughout the Commonwealth in 2017 with HUD’s Point-in-Time (PIT) counts. The data show that while Pennsylvania’s homeless population has decreased in the past five years, its rank relative to other states and Washington D.C. climbed from 10th to 7th highest. The latest point-in-time counts suggest a homeless population of just over 14,000 persons in Pennsylvania.
The new report was built by PASDC with Esri Story Maps and ArcGIS Online and includes interactive maps featuring Pennsylvania’s Continuum of Care (CoC) regions. Be sure to click on each map and region to view all the regions’ statistics.

In addition to the story map, Brian was instrumental in the construction of a new tool and resource for those who work with homelessness. The “Homeless Shelters and Services in PA” web-based map application features an extensive list of shelters throughout the state by the population served (e.g. men, women, families) as well as county government and other services that can connect homeless individuals or caseworkers to a nearby resource.
