Tell Congress to Fix Predatory Prison Telecom System to Keep Families Connected

Midterms are fast approaching, which means most members of Congress are getting ready to go back to their districts to continue campaigning. But before they go on break, we need them to fight for families with incarcerated loved ones.

Color Of Change and our prison phone justice partners are urging Congress to pass the Martha Wright Act. This legislation would give the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) more authority to regulate how much prisons and jails can charge incarcerated people and their families for phone calls.

We have sent target letters to key members of Congress, had multiple meetings with congressional staff and will keep fighting on behalf of Black families who are being targeted by the predatory prison telecom system.

Congress MUST pass the Martha Wright Act this year. We need your help now. Please call your representative today at https://act.newmode.net/action/color-change/call-congress-and-tell-them-pass-martha-wright-act.

Predatory prison telecom companies such as Securus (owned by Aventiv Technologies) and ViaPath Technologies (formerly GTL) rake in billions of dollars a year by preying on incarcerated people and their loved ones. These companies charge exorbitant rates for phone calls to and from prison — up to $1 a minute.

With control of Congress at stake in November, our representatives must act before Election Day. Incarcerated people and their loved ones deserve to stay connected, period. The Martha Wright Act can help make that possible.

Here’s the good news: We are closer than ever to passing this bill. Since August 1, seven members of the U.S. House of Representatives have stepped up to co-sponsor this critical bill. And the legislation passed out of a relevant Senate committee earlier this year. Public pressure from members like you made that happen. And we can bring even more attention and pressure on this issue with your help.
